Would You Believe
Down in the valley of darkness
The good children listen to parents
And parents tell stories of sunlight to put us to sleep
Would you believe
Deep in the shade of the mountain
When grandma and grandpa were sleeping
Long past his bedtime your father was lying awake
Imagining rainbows reflected in his soul
And longing for the light on his face
Would you believe it
He had to see it for himself
So he stole to the slopes in the darkness
And with only the faith that moves mountains
He moved it beneath him a step at a time
He started to climb
Then he ran to the top where the air was a shimmering golden
Made his hands into cups but the sunlight was more
Than a grown man could hold
And after he drank his fill
Maybe he thought of you sleeping in the shadow of that hill
So he filled up his pockets with sunlight
And he filled both his hands, and he closed them up tight
And wrapping his treasure inside him, he turned back around
And carried it down
Would you believe it
He wants you to see it for yourself
So back in the valley of darkness
You sit at the feet of your parents
When he opens his hands, he can see that the sunlight is gone
No, you can’t take the truth from the hands of your father
You’ll just have to climb up to the light of the dawn
Would you believe it
He wants you to see it for yourself
So don’t just believe it
Don’t trust in me, my child
You’ve got to see this
You’ve got to see it for yourself
You’ve got to see it for yourself
